Financial Director’s Associate Intern

Location: Remote (with optional hybrid in Boston)

Internship Type: Unpaid (20–30 hours/week)

About Us

GK News is a mission-driven media company committed to rebuilding trust in journalism through clarity, structure, and objectivity. We produce research-backed reporting and in-depth analysis using a proprietary framework that avoids sensationalism and political slant. Our editorial approach is designed to equip readers with the tools to think critically, not passively consume. If you’re passionate about writing with purpose—and believe journalism should educate, not inflame—you’ll thrive here.

Job Overview

We are seeking a highly organized and analytically minded Financial Director’s Associate Intern to support financial planning, tracking, and strategic modeling efforts during our pre-seed stage. In this role, you’ll work directly with our Financial Director to assist in forecasting, budgeting, and financial reporting for a mission-driven media startup in early-stage development.

This is an ideal opportunity for a student interested in media economics, business strategy, or startup finance to gain hands-on experience building financial infrastructure from the ground up. You’ll learn how to develop financial models, manage expenses, prepare for investor due diligence, and support long-term monetization planning.

This is an unpaid internship requiring approximately 20–30 hours per week. High-performing interns will be strongly considered for conversion to paid positions (our financial analyst roles typically start at $18–$22/hour).

Responsibilities

  • Assist in maintaining and updating financial models related to operational costs, revenue projections, and investment needs
  • Help track actuals against budget and identify variances
  • Organize and prepare supporting documentation for investor outreach and fundraising rounds
  • Support development of pricing strategy frameworks and scenario planning
  • Conduct industry and competitor benchmarking related to cost structures, monetization models, and user growth
  • Assist in preparing internal financial reports, dashboards, and investor updates
  • Coordinate with editorial, product, and operations teams to assess cost implications of upcoming milestones
  • Help refine and document internal finance procedures for scalability

Qualifications

  • Current undergraduate student studying finance, business, economics, accounting, or a related field
  • Strong Excel or Google Sheets skills (familiarity with modeling preferred)
  • High attention to detail and comfort with numbers
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills
  • Interest in media, startups, or social-impact businesses a plus
  • No prior internship experience required—eagerness to learn and take initiative is most important

What We Offer

  • One-on-one mentorship from GK’s Financial Director
  • Hands-on experience supporting the financial foundation of an early-stage media company
  • Exposure to real-world investor materials, internal models, and strategic decision-making
  • The opportunity to contribute meaningfully to a mission that prioritizes civic trust and editorial integrity
  • Strong consideration for conversion to a paid role after demonstrated performance
  • Flexible, remote-friendly structure with optional hybrid availability in Boston
